Nancy Byron

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

High School: El Camino Real (Graduated 1976)

Higher Education: B.A. in graphic communications (1983), San Diego State University

Class Year: Graduate student at ISU-Meridian Health Science Center
Master of Counseling
Anticipated graduation date is 2013

Major: Mental Health

Interests/Hobbies: My great loves are art (painting with acrylics), horses and horseback riding. I was honored that one of my designs was selected as the 2010 Idaho State University holiday card.

Career goal: For 25 years, I operated my own graphic design company in Los Angeles and Boise, creating logos, packaging and textile design for the garment industry. However, I'd always had a calling to help people—a calling I hadn't been able to fulfill in my art career.

My goal is to become a mental health counselor and use art and equine therapy to help people work through emotional difficulties and conflict.

Why ISU-Meridian Health Science Center? I did my research. I talked to a lot of people who told me the counseling program was great. So I called up and spoke to faculty. I couldn't believe how helpful everyone was. It has absolutely been the right decision.

ISU Experience: It's been fantastic so far. My professors are wonderful. Class instruction is great. There are nine students in my cohort—ranging in age from 30 to 60 and they are a dynamic group of individuals. How perfect is that for sharing life experiences?

Advice to future students: Follow your passion, but prepare to work hard—especially in a rigorous graduate program like Counseling. The homework, reading and class preparation may seem overwhelming at first, but you'll adjust. Enjoy the journey.

Nationally the amount of student debt following graduation continues to increase. For information on how you can help educate the next generation of great Idaho State University scholars contact the ISU Foundation or call (208) 282-3470.
