The HVAC (Heating / Ventilation / Air Conditioning) Department is responsible for maintaining the building mechanical equipment in the Pocatello academic buildings to provide comfortable temperature conditions for the building occupants. Specialty equipment of various departments, housing facilities, and auxiliary department equipment are serviced upon request by work order or in an emergency.
Colonial Hall, built in 1925, and the Administration Building, built in 1939, still have some of their original heating equipment in use.
Heat Plant Foreman: Mark Cates, 282-2696
The central heating plant is located in building #20 and provides steam to about 40 campus buildings for heat, hot water, and steam-related equipment. The plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the heating season from about mid-September to June. Steam is supplied by means of piping located in a steam tunnel system, consisting of about two miles of tunnel throughout campus. Of all the steam used by the campus, about 80% is returned to plant in the form of water to be re-used to make new steam. The current steam plant was constructed in 1947 and two of the original boilers are still in use today.

Electrical Foreman: Kent Blessinger, 282-4502
Responsibilities in the electrical department cover many aspects of the electrical field, including installation on new electrical circuits and maintenance of existing electrical. The electrical department is also responsible for approximately 50 fire alarm systems and 50 elevators. The electrical department oversees the inspection of the 27 fire sprinkler systems on campus. The electrical department assists the HVAC Team with various situations around campus, also they work with the planners and designers of projects to make sure the requirements of Facilities Services are met. The electricians are also responsible to maintain their licenses and keep them up to date which includes the Journeyman electrician license and the NICET level 2 fire alarm system license.

The shops department does small remodels and constructs furniture. We have a sign shop that maintains and makes all of the signs for campus. Shops partners with the maintenance crew to help with maintenance on buildings. The shops department has a paint crew that paints newly constructed buildings and buildings that need painting for maintenance. We have a student crew that does moving of departments and various jobs around the campus. The lock shop takes care of key and lock needs on campus.
