Graduate Assistant Teaching Experience
"GATE" Scholars Program

The purpose of the Graduate School’s Graduate Assistant Teaching Experience “GATE” Scholars Program is to provide Idaho State University graduate teaching assistants with a focused opportunity to explore and consider aspects and information associated with faculty preparation and a career in the academy. The GATE program was launched during the 2009-2010 academic year, with a class of 6 scholars representing graduate programs in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Historical Resource Management, Measurement and Control Engineering, Speech-Language Pathology, and Sociology. This Fall 2010, we are pleased to announce and congratulate three GATE scholars: Seth Clark, Michelle Winmill and Paul Judson Dodez.

Seth Clark, orginally from Grangeville, Idaho, earned a Bachelor of ISU LogoArts degree in English from Northwest Nazarene University. He is now pursuing a Master of Arts degree in English. Seth stated the following in relation to his GATE award and experience: “As a GATE Scholar, I have been preparing for a career in higher education. Along with participating in the GATE Seminar course, I am reading publications of the Council of Graduate Schools, observing and co-teaching an English composition course, taking English 6631: Seminar in the Teaching of Composition, and attending workshops for technological pedagogy and web-based tools. The GATE program has been a great educational and preparatory experience."

Michelle Winmill, originally from ISU LogoSouthampton, in the United Kingdom, received a Bachelor of Arts in History, and is now pursuing a Master of Arts in Historical Resource Management. In commenting on her GATE award and experience, Michelle said: “The GATE assistantship has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to not only pursue my own research, but to develop experience and knowledge in both teaching and the administration of an academic institution. This is important to me as I plan on pursuing a Ph.D. once I have completed my Master's Degree.”

ISU LogoPaul Judson Dodez, originally from Sweetwater, Tennessee, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art in Painting, and is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Painting/Drawing. Of the GATE experience, Paul said: "This scholarship is an absolute honor. For me, it is taking a great experience of grad school at ISU and making it even better.
