Institute of Rural Health celebrates 20 years, $34 million of grants at Idaho State University

The Idaho State University Institute of Rural Health – which has been awarded $34 million in grant and contract funds since its inception – will celebrate its 20th anniversary at the Idaho Conference on Health Care on Oct. 30 at ISU.

Members of the IRH will staff booths and offer celebratory cake at the conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third floor of the Pond Student Union.

In 1989, the Institute of Rural Health (IRH) was developed as a non-academic unit by Linda Hatzenbuehler, who was dean of the Kasiska College of Health Professions at the time and is currently ISU associate vice president for health education. The IRH was started to promote the growth of research and bring in external funding from both grants and contracts. (more…)

Find out about these programs and many more at the fourth annual “Health Science Experience Night” hosted by Idaho State University, Thursday, Oct. 29, 5:30-8 p.m.

The event will be at the new ISU-Meridian Health Science Center, 1311 E. Central Drive, on the north side of I-84 between Locust Grove and Meridian roads. (more…)

Idaho Conference on Health Care Oct. 30 features new format; second annual Thomas Geriatric Health Symposium invites public

The 22nd annual Idaho Conference on Health Care Oct. 30 on the theme “Caring for Idaho” features a new format and includes the second annual Thomas Geriatric Health Symposium, which is free and open to the public.

The conference, sponsored by the Idaho State University Kasiska College of Health Professions, will be transmitted from Pocatello to the ISU-Meridian Health Science Center via ISU’s distance learning network.  The conference will feature four distinct tracks, including: (more…)

Idaho State University Idaho Oral Health Institute receives $329,670 grant

Idaho State University has received a $329,670 federal grant to help create the ISU Idaho Oral Health Institute (IOHI). The vision of the Institute is to provide a center for oral health education, research and clinical practice in Idaho and the Pacific Northwest, as well as nationally and internationally.

ISU received the grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). (more…)

ISU-Meridian’s Judy Thorne awarded grant for HIV training and education

Idaho State University-Meridian HIV/AIDS education coordinator, Judy Thorne, has been awarded $126,000 in federal grant money to aid Idaho health professionals and practitioners in the detection and prevention of HIV and AIDS in Idaho.

Approximately $101,000 is renewal of an existing grant to train rural practitioners in administering a field test for the detection of HIV and AIDS.  Practitioners include physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists and dentists. (more…)

Idaho Technology Incentive grants fund Idaho State University programs

Idaho State University received more than $368,000 in Idaho Technology Incentive Grants in fiscal year 2010 from the Idaho State Board of Education’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Research in Idaho.

These grants are designed to integrate technology into curriculums, enhance the rate and quality of student learning, enhance faculty productivity and increase access to educational programs. (more…)

Idaho State University Institute of Rural Health’s Kirkwood wins prestigious Voice Award

Idaho State University’s Institute of Rural Health Senior Research Associate Ann Kirkwood has been named a winner of the prestigious Voice Award, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s Center for Mental Health Services announced today.

The 2009 Voice Awards ceremony will take place at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, Calif., on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The event will bring together people from the entertainment industry and mental health consumer and advocacy communities for a night that celebrates increased awareness of mental health issues and the power of recovery. Idaho State University Homecoming award recipients announced; recognition dinner set Oct. 2

Idaho State University will honor current faculty, alumni and supporters with awards during 2009 Homecoming.

Recipients will be honored at the President’s Alumni Recognition Dinner at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the Red Lion Hotel in Pocatello, 1555 Pocatello Creek Road. A reception at 6 p.m. will precede the dinner. Those wishing to attend should contact the ISU Alumni Office at (208) 282-3755 or e-mail alumni@isu.edu. The cost is $40.

Anthropologist and ISU faculty member Richard D. Hansen is being honored with the Idaho State University Achievement Award; Rafi Ahmed, current director of the Emory Vaccine Center at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., is being honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award; philanthropist, businessman and executive James E. Rogers is being honored with the William J. Bartz Award; Brigadier General Amos A. Jordan and athletic administrator Ronald Stephenson are receiving the President’s Medallion; and business partners Dennis and Pam Moodie and educators Roger and Nancy Wheeler are Homecoming Parade Grand Marshalls. Idaho State University awarded $1.5 million for youth suicide prevention

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has awarded $1.5 million to Idaho State University’s Institute of Rural Health for youth suicide prevention projects over the next three years.

The grant will help fund crucial suicide prevention efforts to reduce suicide attempts and completions among 10-24-year-olds. Projects will include training adults to identify warning signs of suicide in children and teens, supporting volunteer associations in self-sufficiency, providing prevention materials to schools, and assisting public safety, health and mental health providers in conducting suicide risk assessments. A series of special Awareness to Advocacy Academies will be held for advocates as well as public safety, health and mental health professionals. (more…)
