College of Business announces ‘06 Dean’s List

Dr. Bill Stratton, dean of the College of Business at Idaho State University, has announced the dean’s list for fall 2006.

    To qualify for the dean’s list, students must complete at least 12 semester credits and receive a grade point average of 3.66 or higher.

Gypsy jazz group ‘Sarambalouf’ to perform Feb. 24 in Jensen Concert Hall

The French gypsy jazz group Sarambalouf will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. The concert is part of the Idaho State SamarabaloufUniversity 2006-2007 “A Season of Note” fine-arts series.

Samarabalouf is a string trio from France. Members play original music in the spirit of gypsy jazz star Django Reinhardt. Founded in 2000 by guitarist Francois Petit, this instrumental outfit has toured extensively throughout France, Belgium and the rest of Europe. Comprised of rhythmic guitars, a double bass, and most recently an accordion, Samarabalouf has developed a repertoire of works stretching from the boogie-blues to Flamenco rock, integrating such popular themes as the waltz, tango, rumba and the slow, with the occasional subtle flashes of Middle Eastern harmony.

ISU Jazz Festival slated Feb. 2-3

The Idaho State University band program will present the ISU Jazz Festival 2007 on Feb. 2-3. The event features two concerts and all-day clinics for regional high school bands.

Vanguard will perform at the ISU Jazz FestivalThe Jeff Hamilton Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. Admission for this concert is $10 for the general public, $5 for ISU faculty and staff, $3 for precollege students and free for ISU students.

‘Wear Red Day’ Feb. 2 to underscore women’s heart health

The Idaho State University Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center invites the ISU and Pocatello communities to participate in wearing red for National Wear Red Day on Feb. 2.

National Wear Red Day is a day when Americans nationwide wear red to show their support for women’s heart-disease awareness. Participants are encouraged to wear a red dress, dress pin, lipstick, red tie or carry a red handbag.

ISU information-assurance, computer-security students meet with U.S. officials in Washington

Sixteen Idaho State University students studying information assurance and computer security as part of the Federal Cyber Service program spent three days in Washington, D.C., meeting with federal executives and explaining the success of the ISU information assurance program.

The students participate in an interdisciplinary program for graduate and undergraduate students studying in various majors at ISU as part of the National Science Foundation Cyber Corps Scholarship for Service program.

The invited students had an opportunity to meet with senior computer-security officials from many agencies and departments including U.S. Department of State, Department of Agriculture, National Security Agency, Department of Commerce, Defense Intelligence Agency, Department of Interior, U.S. Senate, as well as others.

Professor to discuss ‘Bigfoot’ legend on Discovery Channel Feb. 1

Dr. Jeff Meldrum, associate professor of anatomy and anthropology in the Idaho State University department of biological sciences, is scheduled to appear Feb. 1 on the premier episode of the Discovery Channel series “Best Evidence.”

    The episode, titled “Bigfoot,” includes an interview with Meldrum in his ISU lab. He discusses his research into what some believe may be footprint evidence for Sasquatch. The episode also depicts his work in progress at ISU’s Idaho Virtualization Laboratory, directed by Ralph Chapman.

College of Technology marking Professional Technical Education Month in February

Idaho State University College of Technology students, staff and faculty are celebrating Professional Technical Education month in February. The theme for this monthlong celebration is “Today an Education, Tomorrow a Career.”

The College of Technology will kick off the celebration by hosting Chamber After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Holiday Inn in Pocatello. College of Technology faculty, staff and students will present various program displays. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served, and there will be door-prize drawings.

In addition, luncheons to recognize media representatives, professional technical education high school teachers and career-development counselors, and the students, staff and faculty at the College of Technology will be held throughout the month.

Spanish professor’s Feb. 7 talk to kick off research colloquia

Idaho State University assistant professor of Spanish Dr. Cathleen Tarp will present the research colloquium “From 1495 – 1556: Flores Times Five” at noon Feb. 7 in the Clearwater Room of the Pond Student Union Building. Tarp’s presentation is part of an ISU Retrospective of Research Colloquia series that will showcase the work done by ISU faculty using internal research grants from the ISU Office of Research.

Each year the Office of Research awards more than $200,000 Faculty Research Committee, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Committee, and University Research Committee awards to faculty for research projects.

Anderson Center invites thoughts on womanhood for exhibit

The Idaho State University Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center invites the public to anonymously write their thoughts on womanhood on postcards for a special exhibit “Sincerely Yours” to be on display in the Transition Gallery at Idaho State University March 5-9 in celebration of Women’s History Month.  

“Sincerely Yours” also will be displayed online in April.
