ISU student uses forensic anthropology to help solve cold cases

When southeast Idaho law enforcement began reinvestigating a remote Oneida County site connected to the apparent murders of three girls, Idaho State University student Lynn Porter thought it logical to contact Oneida County Sheriff Jeff Semrad and volunteer her help.

A soon-to-be senior at ISU, Porter has the double major of anthropology and criminal justice administration. She intends to pursue a career working with law enforcement in forensic anthropology. (more…)

Text messaging popular among ISU students

Cars whoosh by Ashley Barlow as she rides her bike down 5th Street in Pocatello toward Idaho State University, when her phone beeps. It’s a text message from her best friend Becky asking what she is wearing. This is a ritual they do in order to prevent the chance that they might wear the same thing. Does Barlow stop her bike next to the cemetery to answer the message? No. She “texts” Becky back while peddling down the busy street. (more…)

Tanzania subject of IMNH lecture May 17

 The Idaho Museum of Natural History and the Portneuf Valley Audubon Society will co-sponsor a presentation about the wildlife-rich country of Tanzania in East Africa. The lecture “Tanzania – On the Other Side of the World” by Kristin Fletcher, the museum’s program manager, will be held May 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the IMNH Classroom 204. (more…)

Museum Fun Family Free Day set May 19

 The Idaho Museum of Natural History and Fort Hall Casino will co-sponsor a free family day at IMNH from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 19 as part of the newly instated Pocatello Museums Week, declared by Pocatello Mayor Roger Chase. (more…)

Nine alumni to receive Professional Achievement Awards May 12

Nine Idaho State University alumni representing seven colleges and schools will be honored with Professional Achievement Awards at ISU commencement exercises on May 12 in Holt Arena.

Jeffrey Allard, PhD, Harleysville, Penn., College of Arts and Sciences – Natural Sciences; Earl Boen, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Los Angeles, Calif., College of Arts and Sciences – Arts and Humanities; Janet C. Burdick, Twin Falls, College of Education; Ray Furstenau, Idaho Falls, College of Engineering; Thomas Harris, Eagle, College of Technology; Lisa K. Higbee, Pocatello, Kasiska College of Health Professions; Norman L. ISU will confer 2,010 degrees; Gov. Otter scheduled to speak

A total of 1,932 graduates will receive 2,010 degrees and certificates during Idaho State University’s 103rd spring commencement ceremonies, which will begin at 2 p.m. May 12 in Holt Arena. Seventy-six students will receive multiple certificates and/or degrees.

Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, accompanied by First Lady Lori Otter, is scheduled to speak at commencement. (more…)

Idaho Science Network announces 32 undergraduate summer research fellows

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence has chosen 32 undergraduate students from eight state colleges and universities, including three from Idaho State University, to spend the summer working in research laboratories. (more…)

ISU-Boise awards more than 100 degrees

More than 100 students received degrees and a 32-year-old Russian cardiologist was honored for student excellence at Idaho State University-Boise’s commencement May 4 at The Grove Hotel in downtown Boise. (more…)
