Web Services Council

Computer accounts are available to all students, faculty, staff, and spouses at Idaho State University. Faculty and staff at Idaho State University are given two separate computer accounts (unless special arrangements are made to do otherwise) when they apply for ISU computer access privileges. These two separate accounts are commonly referred to as Extended LAN (Local Area Network), which gives faculty and staff access to additonal administrative resources, and CWIS (Campus Wide Information System) accounts. In addition to the computers administered by the ISU Computer Center, there are several computers administered by various academic departments on campus. For accounts on departmental computers, contact the appropriate departmental offices. This document simply gives an overview of computer accounts at ISU. More detailed information about the accounts, is available from the Helpdesk.

How do I set up my account?

Faculty and Staff can open computer accounts free of charge for the duration of their employment at ISU, and may either request accounts through their department secretary or by contacting the Computer Center at 2872. Special accounts are sometimes granted for people who are neither students, faculty, or staff at ISU, but such accounts must be approved by the Academic User Services Manager.

Students can obtain accounts at the Computer Center Helpdesk in the basement of the Business Administration Building, or at the Idaho Falls and Twin Falls Microcomputer Labs. You will need to fill out an account application form and pay the required fee each semester to use the networks. Students will be asked to read and sign a Student Computing Contract upon registering for an account. This contract explains the acceptable use policies for ISU computer accounts, as well as the consequences of non-acceptable use.
If students want to keep their data from semester to semester and want to beat the registration rush, it is wise to renew accounts before the end of the semester (although accounts aren't officially purged until the first week of a new semester). If you would like to maintain your account through the twelve weeks of summer, you may do this by paying the summer computer use fee.
