Pond Student Union Ballroom
Reception 5:30 pm - Dinner 6:30 pm - Program 7:15 pm

As Scientific Integrity Program Manager at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), Michael Halpern raises awareness about political interference in federal government science and its consequences for our health, safety and environment. Based in Washington, D.C., Halpern has worked with Congress and the media to expose several cases where scientists were censored or their work was misused for political reasons at agencies like the Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency. He has also written about ways to remove institutional barriers to intellectual freedom among government scientists. He came to UCS in 2004 to help launch the UCS Scientific Integrity Program. Previously, he coordinated public awareness efforts at the World Wildlife Fund and at the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota. Halpern holds B.A. degrees in communication theory and sociology from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
