ISU professor emeritus produces national PBS series on TV’s formative years

For 20 years, mass communication professor Mike Trinklein taught his Idaho State University students about television. On Jan. 2, his audience expands to include the entire country. Trinklein’s latest effort is “Pioneers of Television,” a four-part documentary series for the national Public Broadcasting Service that airs on Wednesdays throughout the month. 2008 Human Rights Celebration set at ISU Jan. 15-29

The 2008 Human Rights Celebration at Idaho State University running Jan. 15-29 will feature a keynote address from prominent human rights advocate Harry Wu. Other highlights include presentations on a variety of topics, including immigration, cultural awareness, the holocaust and the Minidoka Japanese Internment Camp that was run in Idaho during World War II. ISU-Boise to offer counseling Ph.D. program in Treasure Valley

Idaho State University-Boise will offer the doctorate in Counselor Education and Counseling in fall 2008. The degree, which is currently offered at ISU’s main campus in Pocatello, prepares graduates to teach counseling at the university level and supervise counselor education programs in various settings, according to Stephen Feit, Ed.D., the chair of ISU’s Department of Counseling. ISU group names Arlo D. Luke ‘Idaho Business Leader of the Year’

Arlo D. Luke, CEO of Varsity Contractors, Inc., has been named “Idaho Business Leader of the Year” by the Delta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity at Idaho State University. Chemistry professor Rosentreter recognized as inventor by INL

Idaho State University Chemistry Professor Jeffrey Rosentreter was awarded an inventor’s plaque and honorarium at the Idaho National Laboratory’s Annual honors banquet in December. Each year INL sponsors an awards banquet to recognize all inventors who received patents or national level awards during the preceding year. Faculty/Staff Update

On the search committee’s recommendation, two candidates for the position of vice president for research have been invited to meet with ISU faculty, staff and students in open forums in January.
Forums with Pamela Crowell, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate education, School of Science, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), are scheduled as follows: Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 4 to 4:45 p.m., ISU-Idaho Falls, CHE Room 311, with video conferencing to ISU–Boise, Room 136; and Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on the Pocatello campus in Rendezvous Complex Conference Rooms A, B and C.
Forums with candidate Lawrence Ford, Ph.D., interim vice president for research at Idaho State University, are scheduled as follows: Thursday, Jan. 24, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., in Rendezvous Complex Room 111; and Friday, Jan. 25 from 11:15 a.m. to noon, ISU-Idaho Falls, CHE Room 313, with video conferencing to ISU–Boise, Room 143.

Nominations are being sought for two Idaho State University faculty members to be honored at May 2008 Commencement exercises. To be selected are the recipients of the Distinguished Teacher and the Distinguished Public Service awards. Nominations for the two awards were due Jan. 11. However, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday, Jan. 22, to provide students and faculty the opportunity to submit their nominations. Candidates for Distinguished Teacher, chosen solely on the basis of teaching expertise, must be nominated by members from at least two groups: students, faculty, staff or alumni. Candidates for the Distinguished Public Service Award may be nominated by one or more groups from students, faculty, staff or the public. This award is based solely on public service activities. Music department adjunct faculty pianist Mark Neiwirth will be presented in a faculty artist recital on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall. Neiwirth has a wide-ranging reputation as an interpreter of major concerti, chamber music and vocal collaborative repertoire at ISU and throughout the nation. He will perform major piano solo concert works by Mozart, Brahms, Debussy and Rautavaara. Admission is $5 general, faculty and staff $3, and ISU students free with valid Bengal Card.

Richard Inouye, Ph.D., ISU biological sciences professor and National Science Foundation program officer, is scheduled to give a brief presentation Friday, Jan. 25, on writing proposals to the National Science Foundation. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation, which is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. in the PSUB Portneuf Room. Time for discussion will follow. Inouye will provide tips on writing strong proposals, avoiding common mistakes and building solid budgets. The ADA & Disabilities Resource Center will be sending out a faculty survey via e-mail. The survey consists of five questions. Comments will be appreciated. Responses are important not only to students with disabilities and this department but to the University as a whole. The survey will be sent out in the first part of February. Idaho State University’s deans, faculty and staff are invited to join the Alumni Association and the ISU Ambassadors in the nomination process for this year’s Outstanding Student Achievement Awards. Each year, the Alumni Association and the ISU Ambassadors seeks to recognize Idaho State University’s outstanding students. The time has arrived to make nominations for the 2007–08 academic year. Deadline for submissions is Thursday, Jan. 31, at 5 p.m. Nomination forms can be downloaded online. The Outstanding Student Achievement Awards recognize student excellence, dedication to academic and professional goals, and community involvement. One student is recognized from each college with the exception of the College of Arts and Sciences, which gives three. Awards also are given to an outstanding master’s-degree candidate and an outstanding doctoral-degree candidate. Eleven runners-up are also recognized. The criteria for selection include readiness to graduate; high academic achievement; above-average dedication to academic and professional goals including internships, special projects and papers; and involvement in professional societies. Work experience and community service are also considered. Nominations can be made by an ISU employee or student. Students making nominations are required to get a faculty endorsement. Idaho State University’s ADA and Disability Resource Center seeks participants in a universitywide Facilities Access Committee. This group is charged with monitoring and bringing to light issues regarding physical access to ISU’s buildings. The first meeting for the semester is scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. The meeting is expected to last an hour. It will be a general planning meeting in which issues of concern to the community are raised and a plan for the rest of the semester is developed. The tutorial “Sexual Harassment: Understanding Your Rights and Responsibilities” is available online from the Office of the General Counsel. Click on the first item under the “Policies, Changes, & News” section. The tutorial takes about 20-40 minutes. It includes a certificate of completion. For more information call x3234.

The Office of the State Controller has notified Idaho State University that the official-business state travel mileage rate in the Idaho State Travel Policies and Procedures has changed from 48.5 cents per mile to 50.5 cents per mile, effective Jan. 1. These changes apply to all official business travel on or after Jan. 1, 2008. Travel prior to that date, but not yet reimbursed, will be paid at the previous rate.
