A total of 1,670 graduates will receive 1,765 degrees and certificates during Idaho State University’s spring commencement ceremonies, which will begin at 10 a.m. May 10 in Holt Arena. Three honored as Idaho State University Distinguished Faculty

ISU international studies-Spanish double major earns Fulbright post in Andorra

Idaho State University graduating senior Autumn Gomez has earned a Fulbright award to work as an English Teaching Assistant in Andorra, a small country located between Spain and France.     A double-major in international studies and Spanish, the 29-year-old will begin her Fulbright duties in September. “It’s almost too good to be true,” Gomez said. “But one (read more...)

Faculty/Staff Update

New COPE Board members are: Group 1, Joann Trimmer; Group 3, Lori Johnson; Group 4, Debra Gerber.

Scott Campbell, director of facilities planning for facilities services, will be leaving Idaho State University May 9 after 13 years. During his career at ISU, Campbell helped oversee the addition of at least five new buildings, including the Rendezvous Complex, the Plant Science Building and the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. He was also involved with the expansion of the Physical Science Complex, the renovation and expansion of Reed Gymnasium and the renovation of Davis Field. Campbell oversaw the creation of the new softball field and the cross-country running course located off Alvin Ricken Drive in Pocatello.
Special projects he was involved with included the ISU History Walk, County Rock Walk and the Greenway trail on campus, as well as beautification projects throughout campus. He prepared and managed drawings and records of the Campus Master Plan and was instrumental in the Bengal Village vision. These projects were achieved while adding an additional 1,000 parking spaces on campus. Campbell has been the major player in the design and construction of campus signs.
He has been a member of the Campus Planning Council and Bannock Planning and Development for many years. He has accepted a post in Powell, Wyo., as the School District 1 Coordinator of Support Services.

Eleven Idaho State University faculty members will be honored with emeritus status at the 2008 commencement on May 10 in Holt Arena. Tenured faculty with at least 10 years of service who hold at least the rank of assistant professor in the academic faculty or instructor in the College of Technology are eligible for emeritus status.
The 2007-08 ISU emeriti faculty are: Gene Davis, Ed.D., professor, College of Education; Gail Dial, M.F.A., M.A., professor, art and pre-architecture, College of Arts and Sciences; Larry Farrell, Ph.D., professor, biological sciences, College of Arts and Sciences; Richard Foster, Ph.D., professor, political sciences, College of Arts and Sciences; Anita Herzog, R.D.H., M.Ed., professor, dental hygiene, Kasiska College of Health Professions; Delane Kritsky, Ph.D., professor, Kasiska College of Health Professions; Robert E. Rush, M.D., OB/GYN, clinical associate professor, family medicine, Kasiska College of Health Professions; Darrell Scott, senior lecturer, College of Business; Rodney Seeley, Ph.D., professor, biological sciences, College of Arts and Sciences; Frank Harmon, Ph.D., professor, Idaho Accelerator Center; and John Kijinski, professor, English and philosophy, College of Arts and Sciences.


From President Arthur C. Vailas, Ph.D.: The organizational structure for the Office of Academic Affairs will involve changes in personnel and responsibilities during this year until a new provost and vice president for academic affairs is hired. Therefore, I have allocated specific responsibilities and signature authority to the associate and assistant vice presidents as listed below:
Barbara Adamcik, Ph.D., associate vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Adamcik will have responsibility and signature authority for all activities related to faculty affairs. This includes, but is not limited to, oversight of faculty evaluation, performance review, and promotion and tenure recommendations; sabbatical review and approval; faculty time and effort reporting; approval of changes in faculty policies and procedures; faculty personnel request changes; faculty contracts; faculty joint appointments; faculty positions, searches, retention and compensation approval; development of junior faculty support programs; faculty grievances and resolution of disputes; honors program faculty; faculty diversity; and in coordination with the Graduate School, graduate faculty status.
Dr. Adamcik will serve as ex officio member of Faculty Senate. She will serve as the institutional liaison to the State Board of Education for the Council for Academic Affairs and Programs (CAAP), and Instruction, Research and Student Affairs (IRSA), and will attend the State Board meetings. Dr. Adamcik is the institutional liaison to the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), and as such will have responsibility for all institutional accreditation activities, including the 2009 Interim Five-Year Review. Dr. Adamcik will continue oversight of the new Faculty and Staff Diversity Center, and the Office of Institutional Research.
Steve Adkison, Ph.D., associate vice president for academic programming and review: Dr. Adkisonís portfolio will include responsibility and signature authority for all activities related to academic programs, planning and program review. This includes, but is not limited to: student petitions; academic program planning, including internal notices of intent (NOIs); multidisciplinary degrees and programs; policies, reviews, and approvals of classroom space utilization; class scheduling; information technology infrastructure for classrooms and programs; review and approval of instructional centers of learning; distance learning programs; oversight of the Instructional Technology Resource Center; oversight of the State Board of Educationís Technology Incentive Grants awarded to Idaho State University, including review of instructional proposals to be submitted and funded; institutional strategic planning and assessment; and accreditation review of programs with specialized accreditation.
Dr. Adkison will continue to provide oversight of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and will serve as the ERP liaison for program planning activities.
Larry Ford, Ph.D., associate vice president for special programs and enrollment management*: Dr. Ford, who most recently has served as interim vice president for research, has been appointed as an associate vice president. Pamela Crowell, Ph.D., the new vice president for research, will assume her duties July 1.
Dr. Ford also has served the University as chief research officer, and is a former chair of the mathematics department. In his new role as associate vice president, he will have responsibility and signature authority for activities related to ISUís special academic programs, as well as oversight of the Office of Enrollment Management. Dr. Ford will work closely with Dr. Steven Neiheisel, assistant vice president (see below), in redefining the responsibilities of this office.
Specifically, Dr. Fordís responsibilities will include oversight and coordination of activities of Idaho State Universityís outreach centers in Boise/Meridian, Twin Falls and Idaho Falls; summer school; continuing education; the early college program, honors program, and international programs; Idaho Museum of Natural History; and institutional program agreements with partnering institutions and agencies (e.g., MOUs). Dr. Ford also will serve as Academic Affairsí representative to Faculty Senate and its councils.
Steven Neiheisel, Ph.D., assistant vice president for undergraduate enrollment services*: Dr. Neiheiselís responsibilities and authority include supervision of the registrarís office, undergraduate admissions, advising, and retention activities; delivery of enrollment services at the outreach centers; and undergraduate enrollment strategic planning.
In addition, Dr. Neiheisel has oversight of the financial aid office, with dual reporting to the vice president for finance and administration. Dr. Neiheisel is the ERP liaison for undergraduate enrollment planning. He reports to the assistant vice president for special programs and enrollment management.
* Undergraduate student recruitment activities will be the responsibility of interim Vice President for Student Affairs Lee Krehbiel, Ph.D.

Karen Appleby, Ph.D., assistant professor in the sport science and physical education department, has been elected vice president of marketing for the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). During her two-year term, Appleby will work to increase national attention for such events as National Girls and Women in Sports Day, conducting a market analysis of NAGWS, and promoting networking among organization members. Idaho State University is among several universities and colleges that host National Girls and Women in Sports Day events. The University has been hosting this event for 10 years, and its program has attracted hundreds of local participants.

The TIGERi project will bring many new and exciting changes to Idaho State University by gathering financial services, human resources/payroll, and student information together in an integrated online environment. Advances in technology make it possible for the campus community to do things and access information in ways that were not feasible in the past. With the TIGERi project, the University is poised to take advantage of these advances.
Moving to the TIGERi system will enable Idaho State University to: evaluate business processes; update inefficient or outdated practices; and improve services for students, faculty and staff.
Examples of the benefits that will be available when the TIGERi system is in full operation will include the ability to enter timesheets and pay tuition and fees online, perform degree audits, provide access to budget information, and track purchase requisitions electronically.
While individual job responsibilities may change, ERP staff will provide training for individuals whose job duties change. The goal will be to make the University more efficient and more responsive to the needs of students, faculty and staff.
Improved online access to University services enhances the effectiveness of day-to-day operations by making them faster, easier and more efficient.
TIGERi integrated technology will bring many added benefits to the University as the implementation progresses. This project will change the way everyone interacts with the university, requiring patience and perseverance to make the implementation a success. The Small Business Development Center at Idaho State University is sponsoring a free seminar on intellectual property May 15. Lee Dillon, J.D., from the University of Idaho, will discuss aspects of patents, trademarks and copyrights of interest to small business owners, inventors and educators. The seminar will be in the SBDC conference room at 1651 Alvin Ricken Drive in Pocatello from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Dillion will be available the following morning from 8:30 a.m. to noon to meet with individuals by appointment. The University Bookstore would like to recognize and promote the literary contributions of Idaho State University faculty and staff. Given the vastness of the publishing industry in the United States, it is impossible for the bookstore to stay apprised of every publication. Individuals can send the title or titles of their publications to the University Bookstore by May 10. Submissions can include published textbooks, works of fiction and nonfiction, but not portions of books. For further information, call the bookstore at x3237. The works will be evaluated for possible sale at the bookstore.

For the past year the music department has had the benefit of using 30 new pianos and digital pianos loaned to the department at no cost. These instruments are part of a national educational loan program that provides students and faculty first-class, well-maintained instruments for teaching, practice and performance. Kawai Corporation, Yamaha Corporation and The Piano Gallery have made this possible.
The department is offering the opportunity to purchase one of these pianos at a substantial discount from their retail value. The selection includes grand pianos, upright pianos and digital pianos. All pianos used in this program will be offered to Idaho State University faculty, staff and students before being offered to the public. All instruments are professionally maintained and carry full factory warranties. There will be a large selection of other new and used grand, upright, digital and player pianos, all substantially discounted. There also will be a selection of restored Steinway and Bosendorfer pianos.
