Eight receive top ISU Homecoming awards

Physics professor Shropshire earns national teaching award

Steve Shropshire, Ph.D., of the Department of Physics at Idaho State University has been awarded the American Association of Physics Teachers Distinguished Service Citation for exemplary efforts in physics education. Shropshire is known locally for giving hundreds of educational science demonstration shows at Idaho schools to more than 115,000 students, as well as hundreds of workshops (read more...)

ISU professor studies how oil development may affect Alaska’s native communities

How gas and oil exploration off of the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands could affect the subsistence activities of Alaska Native communities is the topic of a $339,793 contract awarded to Idaho State University Department of Anthropology faculty member Kate Reedy-Maschner. Faculty/Staff Update

The research of Associate Professor Philip Homan, Eli M. Oboler Library catalog librarian,on the late Kittie Wilkins, “Horse Queen of Idaho,” is featured in the October 2008 issue of “Idaho Magazine.” Homan is writing the first biography of Wilkins. Wilkins was boss of the Wilkins Horse Co. in the Bruneau Valley of Owyhee County. Homan says she was the only woman in the nation at the turn of the 20th century whose sole occupation was horse dealing. The company owned 10,000 horses, the largest herd owned by a single family in the West.

The Student Health Center is offering flu shots to ISU students, faculty, staff and spouses. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are not required. Cost is $20, payable with cash, check, debit or credit card at the time of service. The shot cannot give you the flu.
The Student Health Center sees a majority of flu cases before and during finals. Symptoms include fever, cough, body aches and headache. For additional information, call x2330. It takes two weeks to build protective antibodies, so it is recommended that individuals receive shots as soon as possible.

Idaho State University’s retired employees will hold their fifth annual reunion Thursday, Oct. 30, at Juniper Hills Country Club. All retired ISU faculty and staff and spouses of deceased retirees are invited to attend.
No-host social activities start at 5:30 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 7 p.m. The informal organizing committee of Bruce and Alice Ronald, Ron and Joan McCune, Ross and Anita Ruchti, Dick and Donna Sagness, and Glenn Alford says it will be an enjoyable evening with the opportunity to reconnect with longtime friends in the ISU community. There is no agenda of speeches or entertainment to interfere with the social function, organizers say.
The dinner costs $25 per person, and prepayment before Oct. 23 is required. Payment should be sent to Ross Ruchti, Office of Alumni Relations, 921 S. 8th Ave., Stop 8033, Pocatello, ID 83209.
Retirees who know of other retired ISU employees not receiving an invitation or who have moved are asked to inform a committee member.

The Career Center and the Academic Advising Center will host the annual Major, Minor and Graduate School Fair on Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Ballroom. All Idaho State University students, local high school seniors and community members are invited.
Participants will learn about the variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs at ISU. Staff and faculty will be available to help participants make informed decisions related to college majors and future career opportunities. Information about admission requirements, prerequisites for specific programs, course content and job opportunities related to each degree will be available.

The SNOW EXPO (formerly the Pocatello Ski Swap) is scheduled Oct. 24–26 in the Pond Student Union Ballroom and Bengal Café. Participants can earn money by selling used skiing and other outdoor equipment and clothing. Those who wish to sell their equipment or clothes can check it in at the 8th Street entrance to the PSUB Ballroom on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 24, from noon to 5 p.m.
The sale will begin Friday with an Early Bird Special from 6 to 7 p.m. with a $10 entry fee, then continue from 7 to 10 p.m. with a $1 entry fee. Hours on Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Merchants supporting the SNOW EXPO are Scott’s Ski & Sports, Barrie’s Sports, Surf’s Up and Rob’s Ride On Bikes & Snow. Proceeds will benefit following: ISU’s Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CW HOG); Pocatello Ski Association; Pebble Creek Junior Race Team, and the Pebble Creek Ski Patrol.

The Warren Miller film “Children of Winter” is scheduled to show in the Bengal Theater in the Pond Student Union on Saturday, Oct. 25. Show times are 1 p.m. matinee, 7 and 9:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Jeep and the ISU Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CW HOG). Tickets are available at the ISU Outdoor Adventure Center, the SNOW EXPO/Ski Swap, Scott’s Ski & Sports, Barrie’s Sports, and Rob’s Ride On Bikes & Snow for $9, or at the door for $11.

From the TIGERi project: Employees who currently fill out a timesheet will soon be entering their time online. Beginning Dec. 1, most Idaho State University employees will begin using Web-based time entry through ISU’s new portal, BengalWeb.
This online tool will allow employees to enter their time online from any computer with access to a Web browser. Employees will be able to enter their time directly, easily and conveniently from any computer that is set up for Web use. Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, ISU will stop printing employee pay stubs for those who have direct deposit. Say goodbye to blue envelopes containing pay stubs, and the time and cost of entering payroll and handling paper timesheets.
Employee information will still be accessible via BengalWeb. Employees will be able to easily view and print their pay details anytime.
One change associated with the new payroll system involves how benefited employees will enter their time. For them, Web time entry is exception-based. That means they only need to record vacation, sick time and other leave. Employees will access their time sheets through the Time Entry channel within BengalWeb. Channels provide at-a-glance information and links to important Web resources. Employees will submit their electronic timesheets for approval, even if there are no exceptions during that pay period. For periods when there are exceptions (i.e., vacation days, sick days, etc.), employees will record their exceptions and then submit them for approval. The employee’s manager or the manager’s designated proxy will have approval authority. Approvers will review, approve and submit to Payroll each employee’s time sheet.
Faculty also will enter their time online. Any faculty member who accumulates vacation leave will report his or her time exceptions every pay period. Those who do not earn vacation leave will only report exceptions when they take sick leave. Employees who currently use Time Clock Plus, and most employees who currently use physical time clocks, will continue to report their time as they do now.
Training on the new Web time-entry functionality will be offered through online tutorials, videos and user’s guides. There also will be demonstrations and open lab hours. Training opportunities will be provided in a timely manner to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to effectively carry out their jobs.
TigerGuides in all departments of the University will be available to answer basic questions about the new Web time-entry feature. More information will be provided soon.

From Pamela L. Crowell, Ph.D., vice president for research: Nominations are being accepted for the 2009 Distinguished Researcher Award. This award honors a faculty member who has contributed significantly to the research effort at Idaho State University. The recipient is honored at the commencement exercises as Distinguished Researcher, and will be given a cash award of $2,500. The Faculty Research Committee will select a maximum of five Outstanding Researchers from the nominees. The Distinguished Researcher will be selected from that group.
The Faculty Research Committee invites anyone who is familiar with a faculty member's research efforts to nominate that person for this award. Any full-time faculty member (tenured or not) who has made a significant, original/creative contribution to advancing the frontiers of knowledge in his or her field may be nominated. Please e-mail a detailed letter of nomination that addresses the selection criteria state below to the vice president for research. Or send it to Mail Stop 8130 by Friday, Nov. 21.
Selection criteria are:
1. Significance of the research in relation to the frontiers of knowledge in that field.
2. Publication of research findings in peer reviewed national or international journals or juried/invitational show, exhibits, or performances.
3. Papers, showings or related public presentations of research findings and their application and use by the discipline involved.
4. Evidence of extended, intentional development of the topic of research that resulted in a significant contribution.
5. Any other evidence of the outstanding nature of the research activity that may be relevant.
Only one nomination letter per person is necessary to provide the detail required in the selection process. General letters of support from others are not used in the selection process.
The award is intended to encourage the development of excellence in research at the University, and to honor those who have achieved excellence. The award also helps publicize the fact that a significant amount of research is occurring at Idaho State University.

The annual Holiday Fair sponsored by the Idaho State University Women's Club is scheduled Friday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Ballroom. Proceeds go to fund three $3,000 scholarships that are awarded to ISU students. More than 30 booths will be available for holiday shopping. Items available for purchase include handmade pottery, jewelry, woodwork, artwork, clothing and decorations. There also will be the Upscale Resale booth, featuring gently used items ranging from dishes to books; and the Gourmet Corner, with fresh goods baked by Women's Club members. Lunch will be available at the fair. It will include chicken enchiladas, clam chowder, salad, sloppy joes, hot dogs, desserts and drinks. The event will include raffles featuring baskets filled with items that many ISU departments donated. Among the raffle items will be a handmade quilt put together by the Women's Club quilt group.
