Boating, canoeing and tubing

For the casual tuber there is no better spot than the Portneuf River through the town of Lava Hot Springs (about 30 miles from Pocatello), before or after a dip in Lava Hot Springs' world-famous soaking hot-water pools. The closest big water for boating and canoeing is American Falls Reservoir. The Big Springs area on the upper Henrys Fork of the Snake River in the Island Park area is a hot spot for novice canoeist, and there are canoeing options in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks for the canoeist with car. Jet boaters cruise the up and down the main Snake River.

Rafting and kayaking

Idaho is sometimes known as the "Whitewater State" and there are plenty of rafting and kayaking options available for ISU students, from practicing maneuvers on a canal near Blackfoot, to tackling the deepest, gnarliest river canyons in Utah with the ISU Outdoor Adventure Center. There are plenty of trips to nearby whitewater spots on the different forks of the upper Snake, nearby on the Bear River, and further afield on different sections of the Salmon River and other rivers.
