Part 4. Personnel Policies

Section I. General Personnel Policies

M. Publicity

1. University Relations

The office of University Relations through its News Bureau, has the responsibility for the preparation and distribution of communications about University events and activities. The Bureau maintains a constantly updated list of media outlets for distribution.

Faculty and staff with events and activities requiring publicity are requested to contact the News Bureau for services, which include news releases, publications, photographs and Radio-TV. Examples may include an event of campus and/or public interest, a research project, faculty or students doing significant work, or a brochure or newsletter to promote programs.

The office of University Relations maintains contact with the state's media representatives. News about ISU is sent to the statewide and regional media, both print and electronic. This group consists of some 130 outlets. The office can also send releases to hometown newspapers, trade or specialty publications, or alumni publications at other universities when requested. News conferences and special promotional tours for the media can also be arranged.

2. University Publications

The Office of University Relations publishes News & Notes, the faculty and staff weekly newsletter, and a variety of promotional pamphlets, booklets and brochures about the University. Several of these publications are available at no charge to campus units for promotional and informational purposes. The staff is available on request to provide editing, design and photographic services to departments that wish assistance in producing their own materials.

The office has the responsibility to ensure that University publications are consistent with the image for style and factual content desired by the University. Materials intended for public distribution should have the approval signature of the University Relations Director on the work order form required by Printing Services. If the job is done elsewhere, the Director should be allowed the opportunity to review the camera-ready copy.

Of particular concern is the use of the University Seal and its deployment on materials, most notably letterheads and business cards. The University has employed an institutional style found on current departmental letterheads. The Seal, about the size of a penny, is centered at top of the letterhead. The departmental name is below that and flush left. Although some departures from this style are allowable, the variations will only be considered on a case-by-case basis. Substitutions of a particular logo in lieu of the Seal will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The University colors are black and orange. Pantone numbers for printers are available from the Director. For work requiring two or four color and ways to utilize the above in design, please consult the Director. The preferred typeface is Goudy Old Style, available from Printing Services and most printing businesses.
