Letter from the President

June 24, 2008

Dear Friend of Idaho State University:

In fall 2008, ISU's College of Engineering will expand existing undergraduate engineering programs to Idaho State University - Idaho Falls, where we serve approximately 2,400 students at University Place.

There is unmet need there for additional undergraduate engineering programs.

The College of Engineering is planning to expand existing ABET-accredited bachelor's-degree programs in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering.

These will augment existing programs in nuclear science and engineering — the only program of its kind in Idaho — and computer science, as well as Engineering's graduate programs, all of which are currently available in Idaho Falls.

Some laboratories will have to remain in Pocatello, at least in the near term, necessitating student travel to the main campus at some point during the four-year programs. Yet first-year students as well as Idaho National Laboratory employees will have greater opportunity to conveniently and affordably work toward the degrees they need.

Speaking of Idaho Falls, home to some 5,000 ISU alumni, several fun events are coming up that will help us all stay connected.

I will have the honor July 18 of throwing out the first pitch at Idaho State University Night at Melaleuca Field. The hometown Chukars baseball team will play Montana's Helena Brewers.

Free tickets are available to anyone at the information desk at ISU's Bennion Student Union Building at University Place. The Alumni Relations Office, at (208) 282-3755, can let you know where else to get tickets.

Earlier that same day, the Alumni Association will host a golf scramble at Sand Creek Golf Course. Tee times will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Also July 18, the ISU Foundation and the Idaho Falls firm North Wind will co-sponsor the seventh annual Tom Sherwood Golf Tournament, a scholarship fundraiser, at Sage Lakes Golf Course. Call (208) 528-8718 for details.

College of Pharmacy alumni should reserve August 1–2 for the College's 90th anniversary celebration. For more on that, call (208) 282-3393 or send a note to andrew@pharmacy.isu.edu.

These events promise to be lively opportunities to reconnect with ISU alumni, and the University itself. I hope you can make it.

Go Bengals!
