Letter from the President

November 4, 2010

Dear Friend of Idaho State University,

Idaho State University lost a dear friend and fervent supporter when Beverly Bistline, a noted attorney, lawmaker and community supporter, passed away Oct. 23.

Beverly will always be remembered for her generosity to the University in many ways. She established the first full-ride academic scholarships to ISU through the F.M. and Beverly B. Bistline scholarship funds. The F.M. Bistline Memorial Scholarship, named for her father, is for a young man, and the Beverly B. Bistline Scholarship is for a young woman, both earmarked to students studying political science who aspire to attend law school and become involved in politics.

An enthusiastic supporter of the arts, Beverly made a difference in the future of the university when she announced a $3 million gift that helped make the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center possible. The Beverly Bistline Thrust Theatre was named in her honor.

She received a junior college certificate from the University of Idaho, Southern Branch in 1941, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho. She joined the U.S. Navy as a WAVE during World War II, then returned West to attend the University of Utah College of Law, receiving a juris doctor under the G.I. Bill. She earned a certificate in tax law from the University of Southern California and worked for legal firms in Los Angeles for five years and San Francisco for 10 years. Beverly returned to Pocatello in 1969, and, after the sudden death of her father, took up his legal practice until her retirement in 1994. She was elected to the Idaho Legislature in 1974.

Beverly's financial contributions to the University have been great, but they were certainly not all she brought to the institution. Her life, filled with success, is an inspiration to students today who can look at her as a role model. She will be missed.
