Letter from the President

February 2, 2011

Dear Friend of Idaho State University,

At Idaho State University, we strive to always create the perfect environment for students to grow, learn, and become the next generation of leaders in their chosen fields.

One of the best ways we can provide a quality learning environment is through our world-renowned research. Idaho State University's faculty are excelling in the laboratory and in the field as well as the classroom, and the result is incredible opportunities for students to do research themselves, even at the undergraduate level.

Our commitment to research has helped us bring in more than $36 million in funding from outside sources, a 27 percent increase over the past year. We have had the opportunity to develop partnerships with many businesses and agencies around the country. Faculty are working on projects that could improve treatment for brain tumors, creating a prosthetic hand that will allow more natural movement than ever before, and making breakthroughs that will help scientists create the next generation of solar panels. Results of clinical trials performed by our faculty were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The work our faculty does in the laboratory and in the field is changing the way we live our lives, and our students are given the opportunity to be a part of it.

It is this dedication that has taken Idaho State University to the next level of excellence. The Carnegie Foundation recently announced its classification of colleges and universities nationwide, and Idaho State University was elevated to Research University High status, putting our institution among only 5 percent of the nation's 4,663 institutions that have achieved this status. Carnegie is considered the gold standard of university classification, and its recognition is a testament to the excellent faculty, staff and students we have in our Idaho State University community.

I'm proud of Idaho State University, and the goals we have achieved together. I am excited for the discoveries that will be made by the next generation of scientists and scholars, currently training here at Idaho State University with top-notch experts in many fields. Our future certainly looks bright.

Go Bengals!
